How To Add Cronos To Metamask

It is surprising to see how many options for Ethereum are coming up these days in the crypto world. And Cronos is one of them.

In this tutorial, we will introduce you to MetaMask and Cronos, and how to add Cronos to MetaMask.

About Metamask and Cronos Blockchain

What is MetaMask?

Many DEXs are available in the market, such as Aave, OpenSea, and Kava. In pursuit of accessing those DEXs, you will need a way to communicate with their protocols. Enter MetaMask, which is a cryptocurrency wallet that enables users to access the Web 3 ecosystem of decentralized applications (dapps).

It is a non-custodial wallet that can be accessed from your browser (Extension) or mobile (App) and it offers complete control over one’s assets. This can be installed like any regular extension. Post installation, it allows users to store Ether and other ERC-20 tokens, allowing them to make transactions to any Ethereum address.

Notable features of MetaMask:

  • The wallet has an intuitive user interface.
  • It’s a non-custodial wallet.
  • It is open source software. This implies it has a large development community that contributes to its development
  • Easy to interact with other supported Dapps.
  • An in-app DEX aggregator that allows users to swap ERC20 tokens natively.

What is Cronos?

Cronos is one of the fastest-growing Layer 1 blockchains that was built and deployed by the Crypto.com team. It is an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain network built on Cosmos SDK technology. In other words, it is compatible with Ethereum and Cosmos-based ecosystems, allowing for easy porting of Ethereum smart contracts and decentralized apps (dApps).

Cronos is built on Ethermint, which allows rapid porting of apps & smart contracts from Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. Cronos can process more transactions per minute than Ethereum, making it faster, cheaper, and greener to execute smart contracts.

The Cronos blockchain uses CRO as the native token, serving as the gas fee (the fee you need to pay to the network).

Notable features of Cronos Blockchain:

  •  EVM compatibility.
  •  Multichain interoperability.
  • Energy efficient and has a low carbon footprint.
  • IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communications) capabilities.
  • Highly scalable
  • Open-source.

How to Add Cronos to Metamask

This guide will walk you through step by step how to add the Cronos Network RPC to any Metamask Wallet.

1- Install MetaMask:

[Note - If you have already installed MetaMask, you can skip this step].

a)     To create a new wallet, you must first install the plugin. Download it from here

They offer support for the browsers Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge, as well as both iOS and Android.

b) Now, follow a series of easy steps required to complete the setup. Once you get to the backup seed phrase, Keep it secured(preferably offline) and do not share this ever.

c) Congratulations! You’ve just created a MetaMask account. You can now access it on the top right-hand corner of your screen.

2. Add Network:

Open the wallet, click on the “Network dropdown” box, and select the option “Add Network”.

3. Add the CRO Network:

After clicking the “Add network” button a window will appear. Now, enter the technical information about the CRO network.

Network Name: Cronos

New RPC URL: https://evm-cronos.crypto.org/

Chain ID: 25

Symbol:  CRO

Block Explorer URL: https://cronos.crypto.org/explorer/

Once you’ve filled all the information onto your MM wallet, you can go ahead and click on “Save”.

After saving the network, you'll observe that your denominations have been converted to CRO instead of ETH.

That’s it. You have successfully added the Cronos Chain (CRO) to MetaMask.

You can confirm this by navigating into your MetaMask wallet.
